The Gap Between Job Seekers and Employers

For many people, finding the next job feels harder than it did a few years ago. At the same time, employers are still struggling to fill key roles. The issue often comes down to a gap between what employers want and what candidates expect. Job seekers want flexibility, fair pay, and supportive workplaces. Employers often want more office time, more experience, and more steps in the hiring process.

AI is changing both sides of hiring. Candidates use it to improve resumes and prepare for interviews, while employers use it to screen applications. That can make the process feel less personal. Employers may question applications, and candidates may wonder if a real person reviewed their materials. This makes referrals and personal connections even more important. Some hiring practices still feel outdated, like long assessments, too many interviews, rigid schedules, or policies that may no longer fit every role.

Many candidates were never taught how to interview, network, or tell their story well. These are soft skills and need to be practiced. Even as technology changes hiring, personal connection may matter more than ever. Employers who simplify hiring and stay competitive will stand out. Job seekers who build relationships, practice interviewing, and understand employer needs will too.

Today's biggest labor market challenge may not be a lack of jobs or talent; it may be the disconnect between the two. And the sooner both sides close that gap, the easier hiring will feel for everyone.
